CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATION TRAINING HOLDS IN CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE

A Two (2) Days Training on Criminal Justice Administration recently held on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July 2023 in Calabar, Cross River State. This training was organized by the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation and the Nigerian Bar Association, Calabar Branch (the Doyen Bar). The event, being hybrid in nature, held physically at Marian Hotel, Calabar as well as virtually via the Zoom platform thus allowing for both physical and virtual interaction between speakers and participants.

The course content for the event included lectures/presentations on

  • Fundamentals of Criminal Procedure in Nigeria
  • Human Rights Law
  • Economic and Financial Crimes in Nigeria
  • Freedom of Information
  • Restorative Justice System & Non-Custodial Sentencing
  • Evidence Law
  • Witness Management and Protection: SGBV, Children & Other Vulnerable Groups
  • Law Practice Management and Advocacy Skills

Amongst the distinguished members of the panel and resource persons were Hon. Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye, Ph.D (RTD), Yemi Akinseye-George (SAN), Dr. Victor O. Ayeni,  Dr. Ralph Monyei, Mrs. Ozioma Izuora, Lawrence Anyia, Esq., Emeka Nwadioke, Esq., Kenechukwu Agwu, Esq., Chinelo Ogbozor, Esq., Alex Muoka, Esq. to mention but a few. Also in attendance at the training were learned magistrates of the Cross River State Judiciary, legal practitioners with various security agencies as well as from the Cross River State Ministry of Justice and the private bar.

The training was divided into various sessions to cover the course content, allow for interactions between the members of the faculty and the participants as well as brief presentations by the participants on the case study provided by the panelists after which certificates were issued to participants.

The Secretary of the Doyen Bar, Terem Inyambe, Esq., in giving a vote of thanks, expressed the gratitude of the Executive Committee and members of the Doyen Bar to the organizers and panelists thanked the organizes for a properly packaged training as well as for the enriching sessions which had enhanced the knowledge of all those present.

He stated further that trainings such as these were of immense benefit as they served to increase the knowledge of those present as well as provides an opportunity for lawyers to fulfill their mandatory continuing professional development as required under the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners. He ended by expressing his hope that the Doyen Bar will continue to benefit from trainings such as this in the future.
